Chute Middle School
Evanston, IL
The Ricky Byrdsong Citizenship Award was established in 1999 by a Chute parent, Kristin Lems, in memory of Ricky Byrdsong, the parent of three Evanston/Skokie District 65 students and a former basketball coach at Northwestern University. Mr. Byrdsong, a Chute parent, was committed to contributing his time, energy and skills to promote peace in our neighborhoods. He was shot and died a victim of a hate crime. The Chute PTA began encouraging students to volunteer in 1999. They officially adopted the program in September 2001 to continue promoting volunteerism and recognizing Chute students who gave their time in projects that honored Mr. Byrdsong’s life and spirit of community service. Students who complete 8-14 volunteer hours will receive a Citizenship Award at our spring assembly. Students who complete more than 15 volunteer hours will receive a Special Commendation Award.
Eligible activities must be above and beyond normal school projects and cannot promote a specific church or religious organization; however they can be sponsored by one.
